Which is better -- 2.2 (LS) or 2.4 (2LT)??? Looking to buy...

OK, my $.02 worth, based on owning my 06 2LT for about 1 month.
The 2.4 motor is stronger, and does not seem (based upon EPA ratings and the members of this forum) to burn significently more gas. With that said, if I wanted the best possible mileage, I would go with a 2.2 5 speed.
The 2LT option is probably the best value. These are not luxury cars by any means, but the 2LT has a few nice things: The Pioneer stereo, probably the best factory stereo I have ever had; the FE3 suspension, although I can't wait for the sway bar I ordered; running boards, essential to tie the look of the car together; and the chrome package, which I think looks great.
I just bought mine, at a dealer in Dayton, Ohio, a 2006 2LT with 30,000 miles,perfect condition with the remainder of the factory warranty, for $10,600. That is a hell of a lot of car for the money.

varies with speed
if i watch my speed and try real hard , - it is not easy for me slow down since i do this daily - , i can get 28.5 mpg , running 72mph or less in 70 zone. average 26.5 , 27.5 at steady 72 mph. even when i push hard thru entire route that includes 6 city stops , and about 50 miles of country road at 55 mph , i still get 26+mpg. it is 275 miles most everyday , it takes about 10.60 gallons. about $18 in nc now.

you can improve your city mileage if you are careful with acceleration and try to use 40mph 1500rpm sweet spot as much as possible. i know it helps me. i love my 2.2, drove a 2.4 and went with the 2.2. i couldnt notice a difference

my thing with mileage is i never know which way to go, see if this makes sense:
- Option 1 : You are at a red light, it turns green. You slowly accelerate up to speed. You watch the Instomatic mileage and while getting up to speed lets say you are getting around 10mpg. Takes you longer to level off to "cruising speed" where you are getting 25mpg
- Option 2 :Red light turns green. You accelerate a little faster, not punching it, but not turtle style. You get 7mpg doing this, but you get up to speed almost twice as fast to your 25 mpg.
Wouldn't the second option make more sense since you are at the lower mpg time for a lot less time?
I honestly don't know for sure. It seems like the second one but I started going that route and my mileage isn't that good. But it also went from summer to winter, and that doesn't help. I won't know until it's warm out again.
On a side note my wife has the hhr for the weekend, going to Michigan, so we'll see how she does on the mileage.

i been experimenting and wondering about the same thing. i have been doing option 1 mostly , but i get tired of people tailgaiting and cussing me. so i have been trying more of option 2 lately. just punch it!!!
you only live once. when i was younger i used to think that if i could not have my 67 mustang fastback in heaven , then i didn't want to go.
hhr doesn't use very much gas even when you punch it , so why not , at least 1/4 of your driving time.
