change the oil?

Okay im really not sure which is correct. Do I need to get my oil changed every 3 months or 3000 miles, or do I go by the oil life system in the car.
I called my dealer and they say recomended the 3mnths or 3000 miles, if thats the case, why did chevy bother putting the oil life system into the car in the first place? what have you all done in this situation?

Well Your right, You have a good point. I change mine every 7,000 miles. I do a lot of driving, but mine are all highway very little city driving. I have always changes my at 7,000 but then again every one does not drive the same. I think you should do what you think is right. But I must say you must keep a good record no matter when you change your oil, I go to the Dealership so they have a good record on my Oil change and they know I get mine done at every 7,000 miles and I have no problem and my oil is not Black & think.
Good luck in what ever you do.

This has been discussed in great detail several other times. My recommendation is.....do whatever makes you sleep better at night....cause you will never get this group to agree on this topic......Regards

We have had several lengthy discussions on changing oil. It's all a matter of preference. Owners manual says go by the DIC...dealer says every 3000 miles...but then again, it's money in their pocket if you do too.

Here's a thread that has a pretty good discussion of oil changes.
https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/problems-service-repairs-42/1st-oil-change-278/

Personally...I changed mine at @ 1200 to put in Mobil 1 synthetic...and we're keeping an eye on the DIC and the oil itself to decide when to change it. I'm at 3800 miles now and 57% on DIC. Will probably change it around 50%...but with synthetic it can go longer.

As RudeInc said...we're not going to all agree on this one.

The dealer told me GM recommends 5000 mile intervals for changing the oil.

Sounds reasonable to me.

I agree with the dealer. On all my cars I've changed the oil every 3000 miles, even with the Mobil 1 that I use in my Intrepid. And all my cars have lasted well over 100k with out even any oil burning coming from the exhaust. You could probably go another 1000 or so using synthetic, but I think 7000 is too much. Trace amounts of blow by gas and exhaust get into your oil, especially as you get more miles on your car. Sure it's more expensive to change your oil sooner, but you have to ask yourself how much is your car worth? Besides an oil change isn't that expensive if you do it yourself.
