Close to buying an HHR

1) Before you purchase ANY vehicle, please find out how much the insurance will cost.
2) The HHR SS is a blast to drive, BUT see 1 above.
3) I have a 2007 2LT HHR. To increase performance AND gas mileage, I replaced the factory air intake with a CGS/K&N air intake system. (took all of 30 minutes to install) and a CGS muffler. Then I re-set the ECM. I have better performance (than when the vehicle was new) and achieve 41.5 MPG @ 55 MPH.
4) If you purchase a LS or a LT, I highly recommend you install a rear anti-sway bar, it truly makes a difference.
5) Really test drive the HHR. There are some significant "blind spots" that you have to get used to. Once you know them, you won't even notice them as you will "automatically" adjust.
6) Lastly, I am an old guy (56) and I have owned MANY cars over the years (too many according my wife). I usually get "tired" of a vehicle between 18 - 24 months and replace it. I have owned my HHR for 17 months now and I still love it. I mean, I really, truly love driving it. And when I travel, I rent HHRs.
Good luck on your quest. And remember, you can get answers to just about any HHR question here.
Sincerely,
MWG2

If your going buy a used SS the going rate is and average of around $17K less miles more more mile lower the price. New SS can be had in the 20-21K range if you shop smart and depending on rebate offers. Do not pay more or you are getting ripped off. I have seen Cobalt SS for 18K new.
But that is not a reflection the HHR as any used car now is pretty cheap. I see year old V6 Mustangs for 11K with low miles as well as many other cars are pretty cheap since nothing is selling.

When it was all said and done I saved $6,230 off sticker... 2LT half panel, leather, black chrome, Pioneer upgrade, roof rails, auto.
carsdirect.com will put you in touch with a volume dealer in your area who will get you the same deal I got.

W/ the GMS discount and the 2,500$ cash back, I saved 4,000-4,500$ off of the sticker price. (cant remember off the top of my head) Insurance was only $5 more per month then for the LS. It is nice now being 24 (wife also) w/ no tickets in the last 6 years brings the insurance price way down.

Shop with E mail on the web. There are dealers that will deal and some that will not. I has several wanting $24K+ tell me that was the best they could do when I knew better.
I know the price has gone up but dealers are more desperate. Also as we enter July and August GM needs to unload these cars. I expect some killer deals soon.

Definitely, but it's not that some dealers "won't" deal, it's that their margains are bigger than volume dealers and therefore they can't go deep with discounts. I did the entire thing by e-mail. It kept me off their turf and free of any pressure from them. Lots of time to think between messages. The only way to go, IMO.

Yeah, my HHR had $12,345 written on the window. I saw it on the dealers website and it was listed for $11,900. That right there told me they had extra room to deal, from the lower price so that's what I used. Took them about a week or two of wasting my time, but I finally got them down to $10,800. (Not bad considering they had the HHR on the lot for 5 months, and it originally was priced at $15,999!!!!!!)

owned for 1 year and it's fine
I needed room for band equipment and I liked the style of the HHR.
I bought mine used in 3/08 w/65000 miles. I hit 90000 and it is a
smooth ride. I want to get the retro moon wheels on it but the
economy is making me put it off.
