On the 2008 you can and it's fairly simple.

The control stick for the lights defaults to the DRL position. You can turn the selector forward for parking lights only or for full lights (although there's no real need to have it in full light position with the DRL function).

You can also turn the selector back towards you and it will turn the DRL off. There will be an audible chime and a display message on the Driver Information Center that alerts you that you have turned the DRL off.

Actually, I am not interested in turning them off. I intend to import from USA to Canada. Canadian safety regs require that DRLs not be user disabled. If they are, I must change something to pass the safety inspection and get the HHR licensed.

Perhaps then someone with an HHR sold by a Canadian stealer can indicate if their DLRs can be disabled as the above posters describe.

Probably no help, but not on a 2007.

Yes, probably helpful. I may import a 2007 but it seems that dandhcomputers owns a US market 2007 which permits disabling the DRLs. This suggests the US and Canadian market versions are different. Indeed, GM would not introduce into Canada an HHR where these lights could be turned off.

Makes sense. If DRLs are mandatory in Canada (and not the US), I doubt if GM would provide a way to easily defeat the law.

Maybe Chevymanager or GM parts person would know if the headlight control module (if there is such a thing) is replaceable with a "for Canadian production" one?

My 2008 panel's (auto) lever has four positions

lights & markers
markers & drl (reduced-voltage high-beam)
AUTO (photocell on the dash, lights/markers at night/drl at day)
OFF spring-loaded (turns the damn lights off in park)

It's not that they can be disabled, you would just be tirning on the parking lights. You can not drive an HHR with no lights at all.
