Hmmmm nice mercedes/BMW etc... so yeah, you had over your keys, they give you the keys to "their" car, and they drive off, never to be seen again. You try the keys they gave you to "their" car - guess what - the keys don't fit. It wasn't their car.

Never, ever let them take it for a test drive by themselves.
Did that work very often? Why wouldn't the seller notice what vehicle the 'buyer' drove up in?

I've bought several things on Craigslist. I have never even tried to e-mail anyone on Craigslist yet it used to be after I would browse the site I would get e-mails to my to all the e-mail accounts I have.

Some were from people trying to sell me Viagra or genuine Rolex watches for $10.00 each $4.99 if I buy 10 or more, but they mentioned they had seen my ad on Craigslist and thought I might be interested.

I've never had a ad on Craigslist, I just look, and occasionally call someone to see if an item is still available and sometimes when the item is available I go buy it. Not always but sometime.

This hasn't happened since I changed ISP's not even on the yahoo or M$ hotmail e-mail accounts.

I suppose that anyone could say “Hey I saw your ad on {fillintheblank} site and wondered if you were interested in my crap, whateveritis.” even if you have never been to the {fillintheblank} site in your entire life, and just run through a list of e-mail addresses they had mined from that site or elsewhere.

But they would have had to at the least be able to hack into the Craigslist site to be able to see who was online looking at stuff.

I fondly remember sending some people e-mail bombs back when the net was new. Its gotten harder to do that these days though.

For a long time I kept getting e-mails saying that my Google ads were not running and I needed to get them running in order to make money from them. I have never signed up for any Google adds. The notices looked like they had come from Google so finally I e-mailed Google {not with the provided link} and someone there took the time to send an e-mail back saying it was a scam and then thanked me for including the entire email for them.
