Pushing in the clutch on a manual tranny model will also disengage the cruise control. Although the brake and clutch will disengage the cruise it doesn't actually shut it off, it only suspends it, that's why the display doesn't report the cruise is off. If you push resume it will bring it back to the last set speed. When you do disengage the cruise it may feel like it's applying the brakes but what your actually feeling is engine braking.
