But American Idol is on at that time! Guess I'll set the VCR. A local tire dealer has an HHR with a nice custom paint job. I'll try to get a picture this weekend.

I saw the most horrible thing done to an HHR yesterday as I was driving home: Someone had added all sorts of plastic panels to the body of the car as well as the windows to make it look even more like a 30s/40s car than before (supposedly). It's hard to describe, because I only got a few seconds' look at it, but, for example, the windows had some sort of moulding around them to make them even lower profile than they already are, to more resemble those windows on older cars that are reeeealy short in height.

The worst of it was the wheels, though: He had some sort of wheels on there that had that sorta half dome central chrome hubcap that very old cars had, then the wheel itself outside of that was painted solid red. The tires were whitewalls, with as wide a white stripe as is possible to have inside the pretty small HHR wheel well.

I realize he was going for "olde tyme" look, but it just looked ridiculous, tacky, and an eyesore. It reminded me a bit of that picture that was posted here a while back of someone who converted an HHR to resemble an old time Buick and who just made it into a gruesome Frankenstein's monster of a car. Horrible.

I thought in the "custom world" to each his own. Is there rules I need to know? Everyone works hard on their cars, do we need to slam ??

It was simply the reaction I had, and I stand by it; I think you had to be there. Apologies if such an opinion is not welcome, however.

We're good, just hope the owner doesen't read your commentary then choose not to join in the G2Gs, et al. Would not dig driving to a show knowing the group has such editorials against other's hard work.

No problem, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Personally I didnt go for that look either, but you should be aware that there are at least 2 or 3 members of this forum (probably more) that have an HHR like you described.
