When I bought my panel used in 2010, (08' 2.4, 19,000 miles on her.) my mechanic buddy told me "good little engine, just change out the timing chains at around 100,000 miles and you'll be good to go another 100,000."
He said if you let that timing setup go on these engines you basically Trash the motor. I got about 75,000 to go gefore I gotta worry about it yet. (Knock on wood)
CHANGE the Oil , I do at 3000 miles. I don't trust following that onboard oil change system.

Gotta say .... I'm in the Dexos oil @ 3000 mile change camp too. Lots of discussion on letting it go longer hasn't totally convinced me even though using Mobil 1 and a 5000 mile change can make a good case.
As I've said before ... I highly respect all my mechanical assetts and care for them carefully.
I'm concerned mostly about oil contamination. I don't want it in suspension .. I want it out !!
Same reasoning why I power wash my cars before hand washing.

The body has a few decent years left. The door bottoms are showing rust on the inside and it definitely has some road rash after 206k miles. I have always kept my eye out for "salvage" HHRs with lower mileage motors. Usually you can find them fro around $3,000 and then just swap everything over. Just trying to figure out if i want to put the money into it or get something else. This is the longest i have ever stayed with 1 car and love not having a car payment.

I have a line on a few donor motors for around $800. Thinking i might do the swap myself. I have the skills but time is always a factor. The more i think about buying something else in the less than $5k category the more it seems like i should just bite the bullet and swap the motor. The devil you know versus the devil you dont know kind of thing. Decisions, decisions.

I just got my car back today with a used motor put in it. It came out of a Saturn with 80,000 miles on it. Got a 24,000 mile/24 month warranty. Still cheaper than a new car. I also ended up putting a new exhaust manifold on it as mine was cracked and so was the one from the donor motor. Hope to get a few more years out of it!
