To demo or not to demo...

...that is the question.

The lease on my existing vehicle is coming due so I've been looking around for an HHR and surprisingly there aren't that many available with the options I want. Times running out so building one isn't an option in my timeframe, I know I should have been on this sooner.

The dealership located an '09 LT that's been used by a salesman elsewhere and has ~8300Km on it.

There's a $3,400 dollar rebate on new '09s so it's hardly a deal if I get the same price for a car with significant mileage on it already. Buying cars is something I loathe because I don't have the backbone for the hagglin'.

Any suggestions how I can move the post here?

Don't haggle. Get a quote on the internet or over the phone before you ever set foot inside a dealership.

The last 2 cars I bought, I had a deal before I ever met the salesman.

I second that! I bought my SS through e mail. I knew what I wanted and knew what I should pay. I e mailed with only 2 days left in the month and they came to my terms pretty quick with no drama or games.

This is the only way to buy a car anymore. It keeps control of things in your corner and keep your emotions in check.

People make dumb mistakes when the car is sitting right there infront of them. It make them not think too clear.

Also you can work more than one dealer at once. The one with the best price first wins. Don't be affraid to let them know you are working with more than one.

A demo is a USED car. No bones about it. What's the difference between a "demo" with 8k miles, a lease with 8k miles, a rental with 8k miles, or a used car with 8k miles? The answer? The dealers charge more if they say "demo". My '09 2LT was stickered at $22,500. I bought it with 13K miles for $14,300 in perfect condition. Start from there. I hope this helps. God Bless, Marc

bait & switch:
be forewarned, some dealers are pulling the internet sales bait & switch
you deal with the "internet sales manager" and then they are busy when you arrive, so they pass you off to a regular salesman

been there, done that, walked out

Exactly what happened to me at a dealership when I was shopping for my HHR. They had an '08 for $12,990. I got there, they did the salesman switch, and the guy I got was inflexible. I ended up leaving as the car was not as nice as described. It didn't sell for a while, and right after the Cash for Clunkers they jacked the price to $16,990! Same car.

God Bless, Marc

In my state, a demo from a dealer has never been registered by an owner, therefore the warrantee starts at the mileage at delivery to the customer. The car is titled as new, not used. Otherwise, all other things are the same. Been there and done that.
