Dingy Towing

I towed my HHR for the first time behind my motorhome. I followed the instuctions in the owner manual. The only problem was that milage accumulated on the odometer. Is there any way to avoid this problem?

I would say to tow it with the front wheels off the ground but somebody will chime in with an answer.

that should not happen unless the key is on

These are the things that keep me interested in the new technology. If you have any receipts from the trip set them aside now. They could be needed later.

The only way miles could accumulate is that the BCM was powered up during the trip. I looked in the repair manual and one of the condtions of the BCM being awake is that the key is in the ignition. To shut the BCM off completely would require battery disconnect.

I can't find out until Monday, but I will get back with you on this.

You are going to want to get the mileage corrected so hopefully you have a good idea of how many were put on it.

The key is in the ignition so I can put the trans in neutral. I also pulled the #8 fuse as stated in the manual. The manual is very clear on dingy towing. I did not expect this problem when I bought my HHR.

I'm thinking he turn the key all the way "on" to be able to put it into "N" and doesn't turn the key back to the acc position!

You could always trailer it. That would pretty much solve all your problems.... except you have to fork over some cash for one.

After reading this thread and since I'm towing my HHR in which I towed it about 70 miles and didn't think I had any miles on it but just did a short test. First for the record, I have installed a switch so I don't have to manually pull #8 fuse. Anyway this shouldn't make a difference. First test, I got up to about 70mph and put trans in neutral (automatic) and then reset the trip mileage to zero and then shut of key to just before lock. All the gauges went to zero and speedo also went to zero. Next I let it coast until in got to maybe 20 or so and pulled off the road and stopped. Started HHR and no miles showed. Next I hit the switch which was the same as pulling the #8 fuse and again got to 70 and repeated above. No miles, 3rd time again with fuse in place, no miles. There must be something wrong with yours. I suggest you try the same thing I did and see if maybe by mistake you left key on or it didn't quite get to off position and gigled back on. Let us know.

Everyone I spoke with states the key would of had to been on or at least the system (BCM) was on. I think you should do the above test by bigdog9586 with the key ON and see if miles accrue.
