I've been running 87 octane in my 06 HHR 2.4 auto. I never saw much mpg gains using 93 octane, which I've tried for a few thousand miles. I found a local station selling non ethanol gas and also saw minimal mpg gains and was not worth the $0.60/gallon premium price.
BTW I just turned 69K miles on the clock today.

Do you need to run premium, no. Will the 2.4 run better on premium, yes.
We have owned two for 4 years now. Both run better on premium and we has enough of a mpg boost with 91-93, that it offset the cost. So if we spend about the same overall and the car runs better, we'll burn nothing but premium.

I have just purchased my second HHR and got the 2.4 this time up from the 2.2 and wanted to know if i have to use premium unleaded or just regular and if it doesnt matter if i use premium or for that matter the E-85 will i get more spunk???? Also can i add E-85 to a half a tank of regular unleaded will it hurt the car?????
I kid!! I noticed a slight decrease in performance (2.2 vs. 2.4 difference) and a slight decrease in MPG with Regular (87 vs. 93 octane). For $2.00 or so a TANKFUL.... I usually go for the premium. Not much difference, but I know I'm getting the most out of my engine.

carmanrick, you'll notice that the responses are all over the place as far as whether its worth it or not. As the saying goes, "your mileage may vary". We all drive differently and have different driving conditions. In other words, none of these posts are right, and none of them wrong. That being the case, I recommend that you run a month with regular, then a month with premium. Keep track of your mileage, and make notes of when accelerate to compare. Then use whatever is going to work best for you.

My experience has pretty much been the same. Cost is a wash, so I run premium. I don't notice much more power on city streets, but definitely on the freeway.
