Downshifting problem?

Hi, I am considering buying an HHR but I'd like some info on the way they shift. I am test driving one with an auto tranny and a 2.4 liter engine. When I get the vehicle over 65 mph it will not downshift. Is this normal? Could it be because it has such a small engine or is there some sort of limiter? Sorry if this post is in the wrong forum. Thanks for your help!

No problems like that with my 2.4L! Perhaps there was a specific prob with that particular HHR. Mine takes off like a banshee if I floor it at 60-65.

See: HERE

Also, the HHR has an "I" gear, which is not like most auto trans 2nd, it actually shifts firmer and is more "peppy" running than drive. Additionally, the HHR effectively has a 5-speed auto, as the converter "locks up" whenever you back off the throttle. I can actually hear 5 gears shift when driving.

It's a very fun vehicle - I think you will like it!

Thanks for the reply! The HHR does shift good at 65 and under but I just drove it again and it seems that it will rev too high if it shifts going faster than that. I assume there will be a chip or something coming out to help raise the shift points? I haven't tried the "I" gear yet but I will tomorrow. So far it has been very enjoyable to drive. I like the video as well.

No chip but we are working on a reflash of the ECM to mod a few different areas.

Stay tuned...(sic)

This morning I was headed south on 75 with the cruise set on 75mph, I put the pedal to the metal and had no problem with it shifting down. It downshifted and I was at 100mph in no time....

no probs here either. set the cruise and hold down the + botton. If it doesn't down shift and take off then someting is wrong.

Thanks for the feedback. That's one more thing I can try before I have to meet the dealer tonight.

No problem here, it shift smooth and has lots of power even above 65. I set the cruise at 70, and it will down shift if need for hills.

Sweet ride...real smooth. The ride was the thing that turned me off of the PT Cruiser...terrible shifting from first to second. Around town I love the "I" gear for a sporty pep.

I have a downshifting problem. My HHR doesn't downshift because I won't take my foot off the gas pedal. Highway only, seatbelt on, no kids in the car of course.
