Dumb Cup Holders

I know a thread like this has already been brought up - probably in the "Improvements you would like to see in the HHR".

After reading the new thread about the great coffee cups one of our memebers found, I just wanted to say how lousy our cup holders are.

I just can't imagine why someone at GM or somewhere didn't come up with something that would accomodate a regular old fashoned coffee/tea cup. Can I ask you all how many times you put a coffee cup in the area behind the shifter to back up, and then move it in front when you shift into drive and leave it there for your commute, all because the cup holders are too small for a regular cup.

I know someone is going to say to get the tall skinny ones, but I like a handle, have about a thousand cups at home, make my tea in the morning and take it with me.

For anyone wanting to get rich, it would seem to me that a conversion piece of plastic could be developed which would fit into the small openings, and then extend out to accomodate larger cups.

Oh what big problems I have.....

Check around, what you want does exist. I had a cup holder for my old Suburban that had a "clamp" on the bottom to hold it into an existing holder, and an adjustable top for a pretty wide variety of cup sizes.

The trouble with a making a wider cup holder from the factory is that it would then be a poor cup holder for the covered cups and "to go" cups that come from gas stations and fast food restaurants. I guess what I'm saying is that there is no perfect solution.

Drinking while driving is dangerous anyway. Focus on where you are going!

Am I like the only one not bothered by the cup holder placement??

I have a "Chevy" commuter mug my sister gave me for x-mas last year and it has served me well. Nothing fancy.

But the one thing I do is I drink with a straw--coffee or whatever. After spending lots of $ on teeth cleaning, the dentist suggested doing this since I do drink coffee and keeps me teeth cleaner.

It also keeps me from having to tilt my head back taking a swig while driving--so it is safer and I don't have to worry about spilling coffee or tea on myself or in the car. Using the bendy-type straws work best.

Just a suggestion...

I am kinda glad the cupholders are crap....that way I wont really have anything to drink in the car anyways, just a way to help keep it nicer/cleaner longer

Ford has a small tray that slides out of the center dash and becomes a cupholder. I had one in my Windstar and my Dad also has it in his F-250. It is such a simple concept. I don't know why Chevy can't incorporate it into their design.

I, too, hate the cupholders in the HHR. They are useable if I'm alone in the car. But add passengers and I can't reach the cup. I looked at a 2009 the other day and that slot in front of the shifter does not appear to be a better solution. Keep trying, Chevy!

Chevy has this design as well. It's in the Aveo. Pops right out of my wife's dash. It's not the best cupholder in the world. but i bet they could put it AND the standard cupholder in the HHR. That way we would have a choice.

Yeah - and think about it, they could make it a $345.00 option!
