I hope the HHR lasts long enough for me to be able to afford to get another one, at least!
Are any cars currently made, or made in the last twenty or more years that are really considered collectible any longer? (Aside from super-exotics and oddballs like DeLoreans, etc.) I don't perceive the last couple of decades' worth of cars to be particularly collectible...is it just me? I mean, sure, obviously there are PT and HHR enthusiasts, and I've seen people attached to the Fiero, and so on, but will people really be lovingly restoring HHRs and PTs and Camrys and Probes twenty, thirty years from now? Will it even be possible, with how many specially molded plastic pieces cars have now, which will age and crack and become irreversibly brittle, as well as electronics which will eventually fail no matter what, and won't be made any longer?
If I'm wrong about this, call me on it, but are currently made cars really ever going to be collector pieces like the original few decades' cars? Seems like that possibility died with the end of the American muscle car. Am I way off on that?

The only new cars that will be "collectible" as in increased value will be low or no mileage examples of limited edition cars. the general release cars will be collectible only in the eyes of those who love them,as far as making any money your better off sticking your money in the bank.

Mustang, GTO, Corvette, Viper, traditional nameplates will still be collectable. HHR and PT Cruiser will be kinda like the old Vegas and Corvairs. The imports will have a similar niche following but nothing like the traditional nameplates.

Cool cars like the HHR will still be around 20-30 years from now, we'll be sticking the latest & greatest drivetrains in them, just like the cool cars of yesteryear are getting LS series V8s & modern transmissions now! I think a cool transplant in an HHR now would be a new vortec straight 6 from a trailblazer/envoy etc. Make it RWD with a 5-speed manual, then it would be retro in style and drivetrain!
