engine swap 2.4 to 2.2
New guy here. Just finished putting a new GM 2.2 crate motor in a 2008 LT I got from a neighbor after she put 7 holes in the original motor. She has another one with a 2.4 in it and would like to have me fix it for her. I can get a 2.2 for a reasonable price and would like to use another crate motor like I just did. Pretty sure it will also need a ecm to match the 2.2. Any help or advice as to this being doable would sure be appreciated and also help my neighbor now that gas is a precious commodity. Thanks in advance and ;glad to have found this forum.

X2 on what Donbrew said.
Get the correct size and year of engine.
Modern vehicles are not like a 60's Chevy.
Although they are both Ecotec engines, they are not just plug n play.
Engine controls are different, harnesses are different, location of sensors are different, sensor readings are different, the exhaust systems are of a different diameter, etc.
AND if the 2.4 is an early '06 model, it may have an oil/water heat exchanger, which requires different radiator hoses (and can leak oil).

well, I didn"t realize there were so many engine variants used in such a short production run of this vehicle. The 2.2 crate motor and a pre-flashed ECM tailored to the vehicle VIN can be had for $2K but the only 2.4s i can find are double that. I was thinking the new ECM would solve most of the compatibility issues as it would be matched to the motor. I know the VVT circuit would be eliminated with the 2.2 ECM and just be left unused. Other than that what would I run into that.would prevent this from working. I can do a lot of fab work for the $2K difference in cost including new exhaust if need be and I love a challenge. The 2.2 comes as a complete plug and play minus only the exhaust manifold and thermostat housing. It would seem GM would have left as much as possible the same to cut down production costs. from what i can see the actual physical appearance of the two engines is almost the same.

2.2 and 2.4 thermostat housing are same. The 2.4 exhaust will work, the engine wiring harness for the 2.4 is different so if that comes with the crate 2.2 bonus. So if you’re willing to go for it, go for it. So long as you post up everything you need to change.
