Everything is negotiable and you usually get GM warranties cheaper after the purchase of the new vehicle.

chevymgr..... do you think in your opinion that the GM extended is easier to get some things taken care of..... or is this just a myth? Or do the 3rd party Ex take care of things just as good?

Dave,

The GM extended warranties are a highly profitable item for most stealerships. I purchased the Major Guard 72/100/0 which is 72 months, 100,000 miles, and no deductible. Major Guard covers everything, bumper-to-bumper except for normal wear items. i.e. belts, hoses, brake pads, clutch disc, tires, etc.

A few items of note concerning the GM Protection Plans (GMPP). You can purchase them anytime during the initial vehicle warranty period. The cost is the same as long as you purchase within the first year of ownership. After the first year, the cost escalates slightly but you can still purchase them. They are good at any GM dealership worldwide.

Don't be pressured to purchase immediately and ask a bunch of questions concerning the warranty they are trying to sell you. Most stealerships rename the warranty's and add a bunch of bogus add ons that increases the cost to the consumer but doesn't add additional value or benefit the consumer.

I know prices are going up very quickly, but here is what I was quoted for all the different GMPP's. I wouldn't pay much more than what's listed here. Prices are in USD.

Code:
   >As requested, here is the information and pricing on the General Motors
  >Protection Plan.
  >
  >
  >
  >About the plan:
  >
  >As an independent new car dealer, Fichtner Chevrolet is authorized by
  >General Motors to sell the GM Protection Plan. We are offering the plan at
  a
  >significant discount without sales tax. This amounts to a discount of
  >several hundred dollars off the MSRP of the plan!
  >
  >Major Guard is a policy of General Motors Corporation. Be very careful of
  >policies written by other companies that may no longer be in business when
  >you need them! There have been hundreds of these companies going broke in
  >the past. In addition, this policy is good at any GM dealership in the U.S.
  >and Canada. The vast majority of dealerships will not honor any policy
  >except those sold by General Motors. The GM Protection plan protects your
  >vehicle and assures that it is repaired to GM standards whenever necessary.
  >Second, the plan is completely transferable to subsequent owners of your
  >vehicle adding to the vehicle's resale value. The GM Protection Plan comes
  >with a money back guarantee of satisfaction. You get a full refund if you
  >cancel the plan within 60 days of purchase and no claim is filed. After 60
  >days, your refund is prorated less a small administration fee.
  >
  >Major Guard provides 24 hour no cash needed towing and roadside assistance.
  >Major Guard will authorize towing or emergency road service for any
  >disablement of your covered vehicle, or will reimburse you up to $50 for
  >these expenses. Benefits include towing, flat tire service, battery jump,
  >out-of-gas fuel delivery and locksmith and key service. Major Guard will
  pay
  >the charge to rent a replacement vehicle whenever the new vehicle limited
  >warranty or Major Guard covered repairs require 2.0 or more manufacturer's
  >labor time guide hours to repair.
  >
  >What does Major Guard Cover?
  >
  >It's as simple as this: If it's not on the very short list of what's not
  >covered, IT'S COVERED.
  >
  >WHAT'S NOT COVERED?
  >
  >Maintenance services and parts, physical damage, glass, lenses, seal beams,
  >light bulbs, and tires. Components not installed by the vehicle
  >manufacturer. Bumpers, sheet metal, body panels and parts. Carpet, hinges,
  >trim, upholstery, convertible tops, molding and bright metal. Air and water
  >leaks, wind noise, odors, weather strips, squeaks, rattles, paint, rust,
  >carburetor, contaminated fuel system, exhaust system, catalytic converter,
  >brake drums and rotors, shock absorbers and batteries.
  >
  >WHEN CAN I PURCHASE GMPP?
  >
  >Any time as long as your vehicle is still inside the new vehicle limited
  >warranty, PERIOD. MAJOR GUARD TIME AND MILEAGE LIMITS START ON THE SAME DAY
  >AS YOU PURCHASE THE PLAN AND FROM THE ODOMETER READING THE DAY YOU PURCHASE
  >THE PLAN. Again, You may purchase the plan at any time but such coverage
  >must be purchased prior to the end of the new vehicle limited warranty of
  36
  >months or 36,000 miles whichever comes first. It makes sense to return to
  >your selling dealer, but if you find it inconvenient to do so, you may use
  >any commercial repair facility, just refer to the Coverage Agreement for
  the
  >appropriate phone number to call for authorization prior to repairs being
  >started.
  >
  >Major Guard can be purchased from any GM dealer. To save big dollars, buy
  it
  >from me here at Fichtner Chevrolet. Many dealers mark up Major Guard beyond
  >GM Suggested Retail Prices by several hundred dollars. We sell every plan
  at

  >Nationwide and it doesn't matter where you buy the plan.

Yes much easier. As stated by 405 it covers everything, except maintenance, tires, glass and trim. So if a door panel cracks it's not covered, but none of the non-gm warranties would cover either.

There are modules on these cars that the non-gm warranties have never even heard of, so they are not covered by them. They usually only cover the commonly known parts such as fuel pumps, but if the fuel level sensor fails, it's not covered, even though it may be part of the fuel pump assembly. I recommend always going with the manufacturers warranty over the others.
