am i missing something here or what..?? does the engine's electric fan only come on when the air conditioners engaged..?? if so, what cools the engine when it's not running...????

 

It runs full time when the AC is on, if the AC is off, its controlled by a thermostat. Mine comes on at about 215 to 218 degrees, quickly cools down to about 190 or less and shuts off. Its really only noticable at idle, though.

 

I used to work on radiators, I actually had my own body shop but acquired equipment for working on radiators in an effort to cut the cost of replacement radiators on the repairable wrecks I would buy and recondition.

The electric cooling fan should come on when the engine needs to be cooled. It is run by a thermostat. That’s why you should not stick your fingers anywhere near it if the engine is warm/hot wither it is running or not.

You never know when it might kick on and eat one or more of your fingers. If the engine has not been run for several hours chances are pretty good that the cooling fan will not decide to run but I still disconnect the motor wires, just in case.

 

It can ONLY runs if the A/C is on. Check the wiring diagram. Why would it need to cool the engine? It is FOR A/C, not cooling the engine. Modern engines need to be hot enough not cool enough. The old fashioned cooling fans ran because they were there and the t-stat had to worry about the temp, the t-stat is there to keep the engine HOT not COOL! Notice that the t-stat is on the inlet side of the radiator, whereas the old fashioned type was on the outlet side.

Don't worry, the engineers are in charge now!

 

Lets just say the rad and fan are there to 'maintain' a set desired temperature. And when your stopped in traffic the fan does indeed come on and off as needed to 'maintain' the desired temp according to the parameters set by the overpaid underworked engineers at GM....

 

You are kidding? boy, I better get mine into the shop ASAP, as my 2006's fan will run with the a/c off in hot weather and the engine gets hot. Sorry, calling you wrong on this - totally wrong.

Oops, never mind I was thinking of one my other cars., but it does have to get "dangerously" hot to come on w/o the A/C, somewhere around 220F'ish.
