Ethanol is produced here in the USA. Once the technology & demand are in place (remember, computers used to be slow & expensive at first), we can eliminate all forgein oil demand... AND, our heartland is once again strong from the cash!

What you might save on fuel will be spent on the higher cost of corn related foods. Everything from milk to beef to cornchips. They need to work on developing the non-crop forms of ethanol such as the forms from prairie grass ,etc.

I`m not all that impressed with any of the e-85 cars as around here e-85 is only 40 cents cheaper than regular fuel yet it delivers 25% less mileage. When the price of the fuel reflects the loss of mileage then I`ll think about it.

Why does everyone think ethanol is only from corn?

Sugar cane yields better ethanol & is easier to refine.

Also, there is a process to take scrap brush that would go to landfills & refine it! Free fuel! This process needs much improvement, though... but can you imagine? It'd be an industry equivalent of Mr. Fusion

Is the U.S. now growing major amounts of sugar cane? Enough to supply a significant amount of ethanol?

I think people in the U.S. only hear about corn because that is our major source of ethanol.

Independence from foreign oil sure I agree with that! But for every plus there's a cost -rise in food prices as farmers reallocate what was once food crop acreage to biofuel growth.

Something few people know is that most of the crude oil comes from Canada... not the Middle East. We import approximatley 65% of crude from Canada. So why high gas prices? Blame Bush for not forcing oil companies (especially Chevron, since they're the most expensive anywhere) to lower their prices.

My rant. Sorry.

But we would deffinately buy one.. I wonder if that's an option for the SS?

Read my post,I said they need to develop other forms of ethanol. As far as your scrap bush theory for "free fuel" how do you think the scrap is collected, transported, handled, processed, etc? Oompah Loompahs? Slave labor? The only way it would be free is if it jumped into your fuel tank on it`s own and your car ran on sticks.

There`s no easy answer.

Not quite correct ....as you stated. Majority of crude oil imported to the US comes from the Middle East (Saudi, Iraq, Kuwait). I think you meant to say Canada is the largest suppier OF ANY SINGLE COUNTRY to the US.

Ah the joy of waiting it all out..... I could get my E85 HHR.... I asked a salesman this back when the HHR's first came out... You would have thought since they already had this technology in some cars, they would have made it automatically on a new model?
