Fob

My son just bought him a 2006 HHR. It came with a key but no fob. So when he unlocks the door from the outside with the key, the horn starts honking. he has to stick the key in the ignition to make it quit. Is this normal?

He needs a FOB, but which gm part number? How can we tell if this HHR has remote start or not?

type "fob" into the search box at the top of this page.

Short answers:
get a fob from ebay, just search for "2006 hhr keyfob".
it must be programed by a GM dealer or a well equipped locksmith.
on a 2006 it is "normal"
look on the label on the glove box door for "AP3" that means it has remote start.

Based on my ebay search there are two model numbers:
15114374 W/ Remote Start
15777636 W/O Remote Start

I still need to figure out which one I need. There is no sticker inside the glove box.

Refer to you Owner Manual, if you don't have one use the search tool near the top of this page for a PDF copy.

Then scroll through the DIC programing options, if there is an option for remote start you got it.

The fob with remote start will work for lock/unlock on the car. The one without RS will actuate remote start if you have it by pressing lock & panic at the same time. So, it does not make any difference which one.

to the forum!

Until you get key fobs for the HHR and have it programmed.

Here's a trick to try, lock the door with the key not the power lock button, then open the door with the key....the horn should stay blissfully quiet.

If it doesn't work the first time, unlock all the doors, then lock each door manually and then lock the driver's door with the key. Then try unlocking the driver's door with the key, the horn should remain silent.
