found loose fitting and hose in battery compartment

I bought my HHR used.
Last night I left the running lights on, had my first dead battery experience in an HHR.
I found a loose fitting and hose in battery compartment of my HHR.
What is it and where does it go?

found in battery compartment of HHR.

That's the vent tube, hooks to the battery, vents gases to the exterior of the vehicle.

Now, if someone has replaced the battery with a non vented one, that may be the reason it's just laying there. (No where to hook it to the battery). Either way you should find the "hole" in the body panel that the large grommet end plugs into. At the least, plug that hole so no outside fumes can get in the car.

The hydrogen gas that a charging lead acid battery makes dissipates VERY quickly in most engine compartments but that spare tire well is another matter. Worst case, it builds to an explosive concentration and a spark sets it off. GM must think it’s at least possible. Use the right battery and the vent tube.

Look at your battery and see if it has the small vent hole to accept the hose. It would be on the inboard most side near the top.

If you decide to replace the battery with a Stock OEM one then I would repair or replace the hose.
The plastic hose becomes brittle over time and the person that removed it was not careful.
You might get by with a small "tie strap" to close/seal and stabilize the cracked portion.

There are generic ones for a fair bit less money, on Amazon I think. Why deal with an old brittle one where it may happen again? Bought one and works fine.

I believe it's a federal regulation. If the battery is in the passenger compartment, it needs to be vented to the exterior. It is not likely a problem, but also not hard to fix...
