(the adjustable 4" to 11" black aluminum antenna) and have had no problems with reception--but I really don't listen to the radio much anyhow...

Really depends on the stations you listen to.

If they are a "lower" power station and have just average reception, with occassional cut-out currently, you'll probably suffer some additional loss with a "shorty" antenna. At least I did with 3 different antenna's......one was a GM OEM from a Pontiac.
