function of the spoiler?

What is exactly the function of the spoiler other than making it look sporty?
I know how spoilers work on race cars, but for an HHR in city or highway driving, what can a spoiler do?

Could it direct some of the wind over the back to help keep dust from accumulating so badly?

I live on a dirt road and I get much less dirt on the rear of the car since I added the spoiler. It won't eliminate it, but does cut it down.

It would take a deflector to direct the wind down the back of the vehicle.

It helps to eliminate some of the aerodynamic drag that is present because of the shape of the back of the vehicle. It should also improve gas mileage slightly.

The real answer, for 99% of today's vehicles, is to SPOIL the looks. What looks worse than a fourdoor Civic four cyl automatic with a spoiler? duh? At least on the old Superbirds and Daytonas you could hang your laundry on them.

That Civic with a silver aluminum high (28") profile spoiler sitting in the drive a couple doors down the street.

There seems to be an infistation of these ricers in the tiny village I live in.

Everytime one drives by I
