WW, but then YOU just badmouthed something YOU don't like ....... me! Why do that? Your insecurities are showing. This is about spoilers and should not be antiforum member(s). Stop that or at least spell properly? ("..TOO bad.. not ..to bad.."). As far as "so many of them", I again refer to the book "The Emperor's New Clothes". Large numbers do not make something right. Jimmy Carter got a lot of votes, remember? Spoilers only make sense over 160 mph and very few look right.

I just got to say, I don't care if there is a function to them or not, I like the looks of the HHR spoilers. I don't care for the double decker spoilers you see on the small imports either, but to each their own. It doesn't matter what a person does to personalize their ride, some people will like it, some won't. Oh, my on the Bullitt Mustang... the ugliest Mustang on the road!

Hey i dont no how two spall or punchate either but I am enjoying this thread.
Still don't think the spoiler is very functional (maybe it helps to keep the dust off the rear window?) but as a fashion statement I to like it on the HHR. However I am definitely not a fan of the aftermarket B52 wings that populate many of the ricers and even some of the factory spoliers, don't suit the cars they equip them with - but to each their own.

Chin spoilers can have a dramatic effect on the vehicle dynamics at speeds well below 100 mph. Rear spoilers on very sleek cars can start adding 100's of pounds of downforce at speeds as low as 60-80 mph, and this can have a dramatic effect on vehicle stability in severe conditions (wet driving, sidewinds etc.)
A blanket statement such as you make above indicates ignorance of many factors. Do you think car makers send vehicles to the windtunnel just to tweak them to perform at 160 MPH and above? Vehicle drag, downforce, and where the air flows over/into the vehicle are all parts of the equation. Companies like Porsche even evalaute how spoliers effect sound and look at how they can interact with the total driving experience.

As for the spoiler, stick your hand out the window on the freeway and tilt it different ways and see how much weight the airflow produces on that small surface.

Spoilerr, wings or whatever you want to call them in most cases are just cosmetic till about 60 mph or so thn if there not just for show generate downforce on the rear of the vehicle creating stability sames as a front lip spoiler. The ss hhr is a good example or the cobalt ss its high rise spoiler actually lowers its top end as copmapared to the low rise spoiler.

While making my morning commute downtown, I made note of all the cars I saw. Hundreds of vehicles and after all these manufacturers did all their extensive wind tunnel test they appear to have decided that the only vehicles that needed a rear spoilers were the "sports" models. The vast variety of "everyday", family vehicles don't seem to require them? My conclusion was that they are primarily a design, styling feature and the air dynamics that they provide is not typically significant. That said, per my previous post, I like the looks of the spoiler on the HHR, think it adds a nice finish to the rear of the vehicle and if all it does is keep the dirty off my rear window, I'm happy.

Years ago, vinyl tops, opera windows and bumper guards were regarded by way too many as looking good. Before that is was fake dual exhausts (like today's fake duals, dual exhaust tips and oversized fugly exhaust tips but not actually connected to anything), squirrel tails, dual antennae with one being non-functional, suicide knobs and other outright stupidity. Peer pressure is tough. How many of you out there REALLY think spoilers look sporty? You are kidding each other! Reminds me of the story "the Emperor's New Clothes". Each generation finds new ways of pissing off and actually disgusting the previous folks. Look at the new Mustang GTs. They have a fugly spoiler (yes, I KNOW that is redundant) with a delete option. Ever seen one w/o the spoiler? CLEAN! That is why the Bullitt version is not available with that stupid thing at all. This is not a personal pref item. Spoilers are FUGLY!!! Hell, why not put V-8 emblems on, too? Wouldn't that look sporty and make everyone think you can go 160 with your spoilered four cylinder?
