Ive got a Magellan
Maestro 4000 in 2 of my HHRs.... Ive hard wired it into the cigarette lighter, and mounted it between the 2 A/C vents... no problems with signal, quick to detach, and continually updated online.....

I have a Garmin 850, and use it often in the HHR. I use velcro, it mounts in the front of the top dash storage compartment, and the lid vecro's right on the top of the GPS. Its easy to remove, about 5 seconds, and re-mount, so its out of sight when the car is parked somewhere, and no mount shows either. In California its not legal to mount on the center of the windshield, so this keeps me legal, and its very visible.

nextar
you may want to consider a Nextar...it is not the greatest gps , but it has some cool stuff , like a camera that mounts to the liciense plate and 1 wire to the backup light to activate when you put the shifter in reverse , it also has a removable memory card so that you can use it to store and listen to music , it also has a program to store and view photos....i got mine off ebay for under $150...it stopped working...i sent it back to nextar...they had great cusomer service , and quickly sent me a new complete set up , so now i got 2 cameras , mounts , charger cables , and storage pouches....i also got a panel....i still haven't had time to connect the camera...i want to take off my rear wiper and mount the camera in that hole....i use the gps daily , it's pretty decent , and they are also upgraded maps at the nextar site for free.

I already had a camera, ipod, phone and laptop so all I wanted was a GPS - got a Garmin and it works great for both my boat and my car. Done a couple of long trips and I like the feature of being able to look-up, select and get direction to Restaurants or Shopping by store in the area. Most GPS units however provide similar functionality, but the two big and long term GPS producers are Garmin and Tom Tom. As GPS units go, I don't think you can go wrong with either one, it's what they do and all they do.
I also have GPS functionality on my phone and on my laptop, both nice but neither really compares with the Garmin unit.

Never needed or wanted one. I usally just have the knack for directions. You can put me in Detroit to LA and I always find my way.
Don't know if it just luck or because I read street signs.
I even won one once in a contest and I sold.

I bought one for my road trip not too long ago, a Nuvi 205W. It was awesome! I'll never road trip without one again. It was soo nice navigating without thinking or studying the map. All I had to do was plug in my destination and drive. I never use it in the city though. It WILL get stolen if I even think about leaving it in the car.
The cool things for road trips:
* it'll give the speed limit on any road your on.
* it calculates your gas mileage, gas cost, CO2 emissions!, ave mph, max mph, time moving, time stopped
* it tells you how far you've gone and how far until you get there, and the time you will arrive.
* it tells you your current elevation (awesome when in the mountains!)
* you can pull up a list of the nearest gas stations, hotels, rest stops, etc.
* since I was camping in the rocky mountains, I uploaded a topo map of coloardo and used it as a handheld for hiking. Set the moving speed to pedestrian, and you'll see how fast you hike, stop time, distance etc.
The dashboard screen is cool looking..
If you like gagets, you will like GPS.
/end infomercial.

That's just one aspect of the device. What I found most valuable was being in a strange town and wanting to get something to eat. Rather than drive around and hoping for the best, I simply punch in restaurants and up comes a list I can pick from and get directions to. Want to go shopping, need a Home Depot/Wal-Mart? Same thing, finding your way from point A to point B not the only use for a good GPS unit..
