Wow in cali we have not had full serve gas stations for maybe 20 plus yrs, and we all out here pump our own fuel, so I know how to open my fuel door, Like Capitan said there is always the locking gas caps, but then I guess you would have to teach the attendant how to use the key ?

Well, there goes my plan to retire to New Jersey and open a chain of self-service discount gas stations. Thanks a lot for the information!

I don't mind the gas cap door, but I do need to find a locking gas cap. I doubt they have one specifically for the HHR. Does anyone happen to know of a universal GM cap that I could purchase? I know some of those universal caps will fit, but some leave gaps to where the fuel fumes escape and won't pass any kind of emissions test.

Just another hickie on Chevy's part. They changed to this new cap a couple years ago. The one on my Silverado truck is identical to the one I have on the HHR. I have not been able to find a locking gas cap for it yet. I really figured someone would have come out with one by now. I fill up every morning when I leave the house. Yes, I drive that much, just over seven weeks old and I turned 10K miles yesterday! YIKES The operation of the fuel door doesn't really bother me much, but I would put a locking cap on it if I could find one. I work in the DFW area and with gas prices now days, you gotta be careful where you park.
