Gas Milage

Hey new here (and yes I searched for gas milage) it seems that most of the posts on milage seem a lot lower than the expected MPG. I have a 2007 HHR LT wiht now 5,600 miles and have never gotten anthing above 23 mpg (yes extended Highway driving)
Love the car but the milage is crap. (does the same as my Chevy Venture Van!)
I talked wiht teh dealer and he said really nothing can be done as it's all computer controled and I would see significant increase in MPG until about 10,000 or "broken in" (both I think is BS, thats a lot of gas for crappy milage)

So what have some of you found out about your milage?

Noted on one topic "reflashing" which I can ask the dealer about.

Also already had it in twice for front end alignment, any issues there from people?

Like the car, just feeling I got a lemon.

I'm in MI I'll check back later. Thanks in advance for any tips.

I'm not being sarcastic, here, but if you already searched and read the posts regarding gas mileage, you probably already read the answers/tips that will be repeated here.

Your indicated mileage sounds about right. However, you didn't indicate your driving environment. Which, in most instances, is the culprit.

Your driving situation doesn't sound unique or out of the realm of any of the other posts. Is it unusual??

Hey Kev,

Snoops right on there man. I drive 2 miles to work and 2 miles back. Rarely get above 30/35 mph. I thought for sure my 08 2.4 was defective too. Well, our car's torque convertor locks up around 40 and the RPM's drop significantly. I know that when I can drive and keep the RPMS well below 2000 I get 18/19 in town. On the highway, I get high 20's low 30's so I know its not broken.

I asked my dealer about a reflash too and they just wont do it unless a code warrants the work. Im going to keep my tires at 36 and see what happens there. Im not happy with my mileage at all. Last tank, a/c on all the time, I got 16.48 MPG. My V8 400 HP Marauder got 15 in town. It's just sad. I cant get more than 240/250 miles from a tank.

I own a 2007 HHR LS with a manual transmission. Everyone should be aware that the MPG info in the DIC is a combined result, and not an instant calculation. However - if you reset the function while underway at a steady speed, you will get a good idea of fuel consumption at that speed and under the existing ambient conditions.

If I reset the MPG at 55 MPH on the Interstate - it reads 34.7 MPG.
If I reset the MPG at 60 MPH on the Interstate - it reads 33.5 MPG.
If I reset the MPG at 65 MPH on the Interstate - it reads 32.2 MPG.
If I reset the MPG at 70 MPH on the Interstate - it reads 29.9 MPG.

This was on level roadway.

A month ago, I went to pick up my HHR at the dealer. I reset the MPG and pulled out onto the highway and right into heavy stop-and-go traffic. It was about 90 degrees, but much hotter on the roadway. My home is about 7 miles from the dealership. When I finally got home, the DIC reading was 15 MPG, averaging about 18 MPH.

Overall, I am getting about 25 MPG, because most of my driving is of the around-town type.

Ethanol decreases mileage - inevitably. It's physics. We would all do better mileage-wise without it. That isn't going to happen.

I have seen a 2.0-2.5 mpg with Ethanol, some of the low grade is even more. that is with doing it on paper on 10 fill ups with the low fill being only 11.3gal., High being 15.7gal.

My 08 averages about 28.3 mpg on premium 91-93, about 1 mpg less on reg. 87. That's on a 24 mile route on a rural hiway twice a day to work and back, through two small towns each with approx. 3 redlights. Oh, also go over a small mountain 2000 ft. high both directions.

8,500 miles on odometer, Automatic, tires inflated to 35 PSI, Mobil 1 oil.

the rate of acceleration is where these ESTIMATED mpg's get you....they are based on such SLOW rates of acceleration that NO ONE not even your grandmother would accelerate that slowly.....

i replaced an '04 sebring with the HHR and if i granny drove the sebring in acceleration and keep the speed between 65-67 my mpg hit 26 mpg with a 70-30 percentage of 70 % interstate to 30 % stop n go lights in the route....my opposed driving was about 19-20 mpg doing 80-85 on the interstate and accelerating with the rest of the traffic.....

I GUARANTEE any of you super short commuters will notice a significant improvement with the MPG if you made very slight acceleration EVERYTIME you begin from a stop and NEVER drive over 60 mph in your commute.....

when i modified my habits it made a huge difference in my ATTITUDE when i got to work and put a few extra bucks in my pocket and i was on average 10 minutes slower (NO BIG DIFFERENCE) in overall time in a 50 mile commute....

try it your bank account and sanity WILL improve....

Wow, sounds like a simillar drive i do to work every day, does yours involve a giant hill too, mine does...

Just filled up for the first time in mine, first tank gone. 20.8 mpg overall i think. I had some highway on there but most of it just around town, and we have a ton of stop and go and low speed limits. I think my average speed was 25 mph...

07 Woody gets around 35 mpg with a 34 mile round trip ( wifey's car).....my SS , with some experimenting , using cruise control extensively and running less then 60 mph got a high of 31.4mpg....this is not instantanious..these are avg numbers.. as they said..it all depends on conditions and how you drive..if I drive the SS half consiously I'll get a solid 28..22 if I heavy foot it with lots of passing and anything above 65 ( on regular)

I'm confused. Have you ran Ethanol in your HHR?
