Another '08 here with the poping hatch noise. It's kinda loud, but we haven't had it back to the dealer yet, as it doesn't bother us too much.

I've noticed the popping when I open the rear hatch on my 08 also recently. Didn't do it on the first 5 or so times opening it. I just thought it was a cold weather related problem.

i had the struts replaced on mine and the popping stopped, but now I'm getting a squeek that is driving me crazy. I think it is coming from the latch.....

My right strut makes a groan when you open the hatch...especially if it is real cold.....seems to go away if I have to open and close it a few times within a couple of hours

Bad strut or needs lube?

Yes, same creak and pop from opening the rear hatch on my 2006. Seems to only do it when it is cold though.

Well thanks for all the input. I think I will try a little lube on the struts. Ours is an 08 so there may be some kind of pattern. I'll lube them up and see what happens.

The only reason for the concern is that the car is only a month or two old. If lube doesn't fix it that the warrenty will. Thanks all

I can say with certainty that it is the struts. My 07 was doing the same thing and after a few visits to the dealer I finally convinced them to replace the lift struts. Problem solved! The weird thing was that I had to drive the car before it would do it and then it would only do it the first time that I opened the hatch. so it made the problem hard to duplicate.

My 08 does this as well. Great to know its not an isolated incident. The service mgr at Bellavia Chevy was very rude when I asked about upgrades like fog lights, radio controls etc. Will any Chevy dealer handle the struts? I'd rather not deal with an unpleasant individual.

My '07 is doing similar things. I'm contributing it to the cold weather also.
If it still does it in warmer weather, it's going to the dealer.
