HHR 4x4?
#12
4x4 is over rated.
AWD (factory) would have been cool, but as stated before, not much market for a $30,000+ HHR.
Plopping an HHR body on a 4x4 chassis will do nothing but draw fire from both the 4x4 community and HHR fans. 'Trars' are the ultimate redneck joke for off-roaders.

Trars are only a redneck joke if they're cobbed together, if the time is put in to build it right then who cares, and why flame someones idea, it's there's and if they have the ability to invest in such a build and that's what they want they're gonna do it no matter what the haters say. I'm always asked why I got my H and not an SSR or an SS balt cause the H is ugly or whatever there reasoning. No finances weren't an issue either, I bought my HHR because it's what I like, does everyone else matter, not so much atleast not when they're shootin you doin because your opinion differs

They have a right to their opinion as much as the rest of us has to ours. We have not attacked anyone only disagreeded.
Now talking about an HHR in the thrid person does scare me a little......
For what it is worth the HHR is listed as a SUV by the Fed Gov. GM wants the rating as it helps with pickup and larger SUV CAFE standards.
The PT is the same unless it has a convertible. Once it losed the rear hatch it becomes a car in they eyes of the EPA.

Very well done, wheelbase was even spot on. I'm sure there are other well done conversions, but I haven't personally seen them.
And I stand by my statement of 4x4 being over-rated. I've had a few, still have a Jeep, and just don't see the point in trying to re-invent the wheel. For the cost of doing an offroad worthy HHR, you could get any number of factory 4x4's that would take you further. And let's not even get into body damage.....
I do not intend to shoot down anyone's idea, but at least make them aware of potential trouble. A 4x4 HHR would be an object of ridicule- I would hate to see someone crushed after 5 years of hard work, instead of 5 minutes of dreaming. If one's desire to be an individual is great enough to withstand the onslaught, then I say hurray!

I have thought about converting my HHR into an Off Road Vehicle after it is paid it off and I drive it for a few more years. I think the way that I will go is find an old Jeep, use it as a donor chassis, and place the HHR body on top. The wheelbase of the HHR is 103.5 inches and the 1997 to 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has a wheelbase of 103.4 inches. Might not be so hard to do after all - but then again, that will be in the future.

The above mentioned Geo had all of the 'frame' components of the unibody removed, and reinforced mounting points welded to the floorpan.
It IS do-able, but the only thing HHR about it will be the shell and some interior.
Depending on where you live, you may have to retitle it as an assembled vehicle, or may not be able to title it at all! Insurance might be tough as well, as insurance companies tend to frown on such things.
RESEARCH the laws in your state, Michigan is pretty wide open, but there are things that will trip you up. Bumper height is one.
