I wanted the 2.4L, they have to get my color from another dealership, so we'll see if it shows up with that engine. How much better is the 2.4 over the 2.2? I'm mostly concerned with gas mileage.

Gas milage is the same for both. IMO the 2.4 is better not only because of the additional HP and Tq. but mainly because of the VVT. Of course people with the 2.2 may disagree and say the 2.2 is better.

You won't regret getting the 2.4L.

Greetings again from Phoenix!
- MikeX: Get the 2.4; I test drove both the 2.2 and the 2.4 and liked the extra HP the 2.4 has - I have read a few reviews where the authors state that they wouldn't have guessed there was a 4-cyl. under the hood if they didn't already know it going in. Anyway, welcome! I've found the forums useful so far; glad to know there are several HHR fans out there.

Welcome aboard to both of you. Yes, I have the 2.4L and would swear it's a 6 cyl. some times. This car is a blast.

It's a 2.4L, I checked the sticker on the dealer's web page that has it. The driver is going there at this very moment to pick it up. I should have it in 2-3 hours, depending on Dallas and Fort Worth rush hour traffic (poor guy!).

On the side - I busted the finance guy I was working with. He - of course - tried to sell me an extended warranty, which is fine. He told me that the new vehicle warranty was 3 yrs/36k miles, HOWEVER, he told me "there are some things that are only being covered now for 12 months/12k miles, so you should really get this extra coverage". I said I had read the Chevrolet warranty and there was no mention of anything being covered to only 12 months/12k miles. I said no thanks and finished with him. But that statement bothered me, so I called Chevrolet and asked them about what he told me, and they said, no, the coverage was for 3 yrs/36k miles, bumper to bumper, period. So I got ahold of the finance manager and told him what happened - well, I got a call back and an apology for his boy telling me that erroneous information, and that some of his employees needed "more education".

LOL

If they had more education, they wouldn't be working that closely with car salesman.

I also took the extended warranty. There is just so many loopholes car makers can use to get out of repairs nowdays. For the couple of extra dollars to me it is worth it.
