HHR life after 266,687 kms... a love story

Am I in love with my 2006 HHR LS? Maybe, but that new Camaro SS looks really good at the dealership too... After 266,687 kms, a knock started very low in the engine about 60 kms from home at about 10 pm at night. Long story short, I just put a new (new to me) engine in it and a new magnaflow exhaust with the biggest oval tip the guy had in stock. (By the time I got home the engine sounded like a leprechaun was under the hood with a sledge hammer.. and I just wanted the sound of the magnaflow)

So, I guess I do love my HHR... I certainly spent enough money on her over the past 2 weeks.

Have had my 08 SS since July of 08. Minor complaints but for what it is, I like it. I often think I'll get rid of a car after a few years but in reality, I've only had three cars until this car since 1994. And I still have one of them.

93 Escort Wagon- kept 7 years. Loved the 5 speed and the economy, room and reliability of it for a college kid.
96 Firebird, kept 8 years and traded for the HHR.
01 Wrangler, still have it.

I'll probably have it for many years. Only 10K on her, and my complaints are that it's not really big enough (a lot of wasted space in the trunk to make it look nice), rattles and squeaks, and it's not really much of a winter car but I knew that going into the purchase, hence the retention of the Jeep.

The traction control and ABS work great, the tires- not so much.

I plan to use a Thule cargo carrier to make up for the lack of space in this car and my wife's Honda Civic when dealing with 2 kids and all that gear.

No you are not alone. I still like mine and I have had it since July of '06. As pissed as this car has made me over the last 3 years I really enjoy driving this thing.

The car actually belongs to my wife but lately I have been driving it more and I'm not sure if I want to give it back.

Amazing. When I looked at the Honda Civic's trunk while car shopping, it looked smaller than the cargo bay of the HHR, which is one of the reasons for its purchase. I took a 2k mi trip last summer with 4 adults and a fully loaded cargo bay in the HHR and while it was nowhere near the comfort level of an Escalade, the space was adequate. Maybe Honda came out with a bigger Civic since I last looked at them?

I've had my HHR for a year, and put 16k miles on it. Next year should be around 26k miles... I'd better enjoy it for how much time I spend in it. It's a great little car for being stuck in 10+ hours a week, and still fun to drive on weekends.

as you know...2 years to some folks is like 2 months to others, and vice-versa. I drive 36k miles a year...so my 2 years can be like 10 years for others.

I bought my 2006 2LT 12/31/07

I have racked up almost 65k miles on it since then...

honestly, I don't "love" driving it. It was a mistake for some reasons, but it was a blessing for others.

I do like the "jump in and go" part of it. But I dislike the 1-1/2 hours behind the wheel each way...it's not a "long commute" car for me...problem is, I didn't know that until a few weeks in, when the novelty wore off.

I wanted to get out of the car after just 12-15 months...bored, novelty worn off, wanting my big comfy leather seat(and seating position) back.

But honestly...it's been such a good car to me, that even if I wasn't so upside-down in the payments, I would probably miss it if I got rid of it.

If it was feasible, I'd keep it AND get something else for my long commutes. It's been such a trooper with HOME DEPOT/LOWES/WALMART trips, as well as just meandering through the back roads on stormy rides home...it would be hard to fill the void it would leave behind.

But I'd dump in it a heart beat if someone were to offer me what I owe on it...just because w/ 96k miles on it, it's hardly worth $5500 even if it's cherry...and owing close to $9000 for it...I'm screwed in to keeping it for another few years.

good news is, even though I bought it with good terms/nothing down, and got a great little car...I'm sorta stuck with it, like it or not. Good thing I do like it, for the most part.

It's exactly the car I thought it was...it isn't the car's fault that I changed my wants/needs.
