That 'center mounted thingy' is used to show all kinds of engine information.
As you can see, MPH, water temp, turbo boost, inlet air temp, etc.
AND, it is eye candy.
I wouldn't mind having one in mt 2LT.

It sounds like the rpd can be replaced with a $5 Bluetooth obd connector and cheap android tablet......

The RPD is prized in the HHR SS community. A used one goes for $800 and up. It can be retrofitted in a 2009 but probably not in a 2008. Think maybe all 2010’s had it.

Yeah, you can get similar function from a dongle and a phone app, but it has to be a high-quality dongle or it will be too slow, and I have yet to see a clean phone installation.

Did I miss any mention of what model years these candidates were? I’m going to say that the silver one is an 08 or 09, and the orange one was an 08.
