HHR Trailer/Towing Advice Sought
I'm looking to add a hitch to my '07 2LT Wagon (A/T) to facilitate some light-duty towing and for times when the internal vehicle dimensions just aren't capacious enough to handle odd-sized items.
I've seen the references to Hidden Hitch and others for the HHR, which offer Class I 1 1/4" hitches commensurate with the HHR's low load hauling capacity, but I'd like to know if anyone has discovered any 2" hitches that are HHR-compatible. No, I'm not looking to haul granite slabs; it's just that many of the better accessories and carriers are made exclusively for 2" receivers, even though ultimate loads and tongue weights would be nominal.
Secondly, rather than bolting on something like a Hidden Hitch, would welding it to the frame increase the tongue weight limit (without exceeding the maximum load)? This might give greater flexibility in the types of available carriers, so I'd be willing to consider it if it's sensible/feasible rather than riggin an upsized receiver which would be both structurally and aesthetically inferior.
Third, does anyone know of any manufacturers of small enclosed cargo trailers (5 x 8) a la Haulmark? I haven't had much success locating alternatives, and I'd much prefer at least having more than one option before being locked into a single set of products/alternatives.
I'd greatly appreciate any experienced insight into these matters. Thanks, in advance to all who might care to share.

I have not seen any 2" recievers for the HHR. The 1.25" has more than enough "strength" to handle more than the HHR can haul. I pull a 4x6 tilt trailer and also have a 20"x60" hitchhaul I use. For the hitchhaul, I have both the 2" and 1.25" drawbars (center bar). Since I no longer have anything with a 2" reciever, I just leave the 1.25" on. But I still have it for "just in case" down the road.
And for welding, no. Welding can actually weaken the metal for the subframe. Bolting on is more than strong enough. Most frame "C" notches today are only bolton for full size trucks.

Like I explained in my original question, it's not about the amount of weight I want to tow; it's about accessories that are only made for Class III/IV 2" receivers and using an adapter not only lowers the maximum tongue weight load to an unacceptable degree but also creates other functional and aesthetic obstacles, so just getting the 1 1/4" Hidden Hitch isn't the best solution for me.

Sounds like you bought the wrong vehicle then, you should have checked all this out before buying the HHR! Nobody's going to manufacture a 2" reciever hitch for a vehicle that cannot even use the full capacity of a 1-1/4" hitch.
