Holes behind rear tag?

I was just putting the tags on my new HHR, and noticed there are 2 empty holes in the tailgate behind the tag. They're completely open into the tailgate. Is there supposed to be something in them? Seems kinda odd, though I also thought it was odd that the tag simply bolts up against the painted surface.

Thanks!
Craig

Thanks! That would make sense for there to be something for the tag to rest against other than paint!

Just bought my HHR yesterday and it was missing one. The salesman went to rob one off of another and out of all the HHR's on the lot about half where missing. They must get sloppy on the assembly line and not get them in all the way. There should be two small rubber bumpers in the holes to keep the plates away from the body.

Welcome to the site. Good luck with your new wheels.
Good thing you questioned the holes or you would have had scratched paint in no time, along with a possible rattle noise when you shut the deck lid.

That is interesting. Mine did not have rubber plugs. Guess the dealer did not install them. I put some in myself and put rubber bumpers on the license plate at the top for extra protection.

Even if you have the rubber bumpers, you could put some camper foam tape on the backside of the plate to keep it from scratching the paint. It should even keep it from rattleing when you close the hatch. Have it on mine from previous vehicle and never noticed any rattleing
