How to attach wires to battery?

Hey everyone. I know the battery is in the back of the HHR. Can anyone post a how to: connect wires to the battery? Just a red and black wire (+ and -). I know the red goes to positive and the black to negitive... but I don't exactly know how to get them on there. Do i undo taht bolt and lift off that metal peice? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I actually figured it out so ill answer my own question. I attached ring clamps to the end of the wires i had by siding the wire through and smuching the metal clamp around for a secure hold. I then unscrewed the one bolt on the red post of the battery and slid the ring around it. I then screwed the bold back on, thus, firmly pressing the clam and the wire to the battery. I then repeated this for the black (negitive side). I then took the plug that both wires were attached to (on the other end) and plugged it into the device. It tured on immediately. Sorry for no pictures. I will work on that.

All modern cars have a power distribution center with a B+ in it. You NEVER attach wires to the battery.

Was it wrong to attach directly to the battery? What/where is the B+ distribution center?

B + is a battery positive connection. Power distribution center is where the fuses are at. The connections at the battery are so important that they should not be used for accessories. Many electrial problems are caused by owners connecting things to the battery.

Here is a picture of the Power Distribution Center showing the battery positive post where you should connect accessories.

There is absolutely no problem attaching the wires directly to the battery contrary to what was previously stated - as long as you ensure the connection is clean and a fuse is installed on the POS (red lead in your case), and that you work safely - connect the POS (+) wire first but ensure the NEG (-) post is disconnected (you do NOT want to short that POS terminal out to a ground with a wrench in your hand).
Here are some other tips:
1)The fuse should be installed as close to the connection to the POS post of the battery as can be done practically.
2) ensure the wires installed cannot chafe against anything that can wear through the insulation. The black wiring loom harness to encase the wires (see sample at http://www.keefeperformance.com/kploom.html) along with zap straps works well to ensure your install is trouble free.
3) One of the best ways to attach to the posts of the battery is with a suitable sized Ring Terminal (see sample at http://www.wiringproducts.com/index1.html) - however, do not trust the crimp - they are best crimped, AND soldered to ensure the connection does not come apart further down the road. The Ring Terminal can be installed under the nut or bolt that secures the battery post, or via an extra nut on the clamp bolt. DO NOT JUST ATTACH A WIRE WITHOUT A SUITABLE CONNECTOR LIKE A RING TERMINAL - IT WILL FAIL.
4) It is also imperative that once the added wires are installed, that the rubber/plastic cap that covers the POS post of the battery is reinstalled to ensure the post is protected from a accidental short (dropped tool etc.) which can be quite dangerous.

However, feel free to use the B post if it is more convenient - but you need to still ensure you still install a suitable fuse, and protect the wires from chafing etc. etc..

This is completely inaccurate. As long as you fuse it...there is NO PROBLEM connecting to the battery terminal. Brwbier, please don't post things like this.
