How durable is the grill?

How durable is the grill?
I realize the big fat plastic grill is toast in an accident, but how well does it deal with bugs, sand and road debris? Especially snow areas where they use a lot of sand on the road. Does it "pit up" like a windshield does? Is the bright more or less durable than the satin finish?
