I am getting about 360 miles per tank, and filling up at 1/8 of tank, the 360 is an average, I find if I run Shell gas my mileage is slightly higher than say if I run Sunoco, or Speedway. My round trip commute is 22 miles, bout 50/50 highway and city.

I drive my HHR like its stolen, so my gas milage is suffering. I get 313 - 350 consistently driving in Chicago suburban traffic. I put in 14.65 gallons yesterday and drove 313. Thats only 21 mpg but like I said, I drive it like I stole it.

 

I have no idea because I don't let the tank get down too far either.I try to keep it topped off as often as possible to help prevent condensation from forming.I think I am getting around 28-29 mpg in mostly easy commutes though.

 

I fill up after I hit 300 miles, thats really the benchmark I go for. With my daily commute thats about every 10-11 days give or take. Usually $37 and 13.XX gallons.


When I drove from Jersey to SC, I was averaging over 400 miles before filling up. Only tanked up 4 times for the whole trip. 2 down 2 up. It was heaven.

 

I filled up today after my weekend trip of 420 miles with Premium, it took 14.1 gals and it comes out to 29.5 MPG at 75 MPH or keeping up with traffic..

Darn good compared to 18 in my S-10!!..

 

Right now I am at 300 and something miles and I think the computer says something like 110 to go...how accurate is that? I have to do 100 miles tomorrow and I don't want to fill before I get back to NH. I'm avg 27 mpg in the 2LT with probably 87 octane in there right now....looks like I may be giving up 6-8 mpg if i go with an HHR vs the Matrix.....also going to a 16 gallon tank vs a 13.2 that get roughly the same miles out of them....having fun driving it though

Goose, step away from the Matrix, step away from the Matrix...if you have to go away from the HHR at least opt for the Pontiac Vibe the Matrix' better looking twin. Toyota is redesigning that ugly thing for '08 and it still doesn't look quite as nice as the Vibe...at least in Photos. Try to rent a Vibe if you can...although I could'nt find any here in Socal. One more thing less room and check out the safety ratings...Vibe is listed as a passenger car and the HHR is under SUV...HHR is the clear winner.

I have an 05 Vibe with AT and AWD. The 07 Vibe/Matrix twins only come in FWD and the 08 redesign *may* have an AWD version. The 08 will likely be the same as what is being offered in EU right now. Very nice car for sure. BUT, it may not.

As for fuel economy, mine has 25K on the clock and in the summer I get 28 MPG average and in the winter it is more like 25.5 MPG. I have snow tires on extra steel wheels for winter. I'm 15 miles east of Buffalo. We get real snow and cold here. The EPA says to expect 3 MPG better from the FWD version so that would translate to 31 summer and 28.5 winter. My mix is 70% Hwy/30% City. These numbers are long term measured averages, not snapshots from a DIC.

Why do I bring this up? My wife is ready for a new car and wants another Vibe in the garage. I'd like her to get an HHR. The Vibe is very nice utility-wise and the MPG's are great, but here are the tradeoffs:

Noisy engine
Odd driving positions with he steering wheel too far forward
Standard Japanese control layout which takes a while to get used to

The one really outstanding thing about the Vibe is reliability. Mine has never been in the shop for anything! I put in the Mobil 1 and that is all.

All that said, I like the HHR better. Enough rambling for now.
