Snoopy nailed it right on...
"I" Gear is used to prevent excessive shifting on steep hilly roads, up and down using 1st and 2nd gears, using the TCM parameters
When you select a shifter setting other than "Drive"... you are in "Manual Mode" using the TCM parameters for that setting....
It's NOT a tranny issue.

You're experiencing exactly what us manual drivers see when we forget to use the clutch on a stop. So this is your torque converter not doing what it would normally do in "D", which is disengage and let you coast.
