If I drive 7000 miles my Camaro (at 15 mpg) uses 467 gallons a year, at an average of $3.00 a gallon (here in SoCal), that's around $1400 a year in gas.
The HHR, at 30 mpg, costs half that or $700 a year.
So I would only be saving $700 a year on gas. I'm going to have to find more savings somewhere before I can justify the cost to the little woman. I think the only way this would work is if my insurance went down but because of the cost of replacement factor, it will go up.
Is my math right?
BTW, I only want to get the 2.4L motor and I have read that it takes premium fuel as well.

You didnt take into consideration the cost of parts replacement on the Z28 now than if you were to have the HHR. And now it's even better since they're offering the 5yr 100k warranty. If anything were to happen to the HHR its covered except for wear and tear items. on the camarro especially since you way you've jacked it up if anything were to break thats gonna hurt.

If you're seriously considering making the change, call your insurance company and see how the rates compare. Some companies rate the Z28 as a high performance car and apply standard rather than preferred rates. I carry full coverage on mine with increased liability limits (100/300/50 instead of minimum 25/50/15) 100/300 UIM, $100 ded comp and $500 ded on collision and mine is $57 a month, which is very reasonable for a new car.

It's all a matter of what your budget will withstand. Do you have a family and maybe this might be a more suitable family vehicle? Do you not drive the Z on the weekend because of gas mileage or you just don't go many places? The increase in gas mileage with the HHR is a plus, and if you did get one you'd be more likely to want to drive it more too. The HHR is more versatile than the Z28, but also has alot less power too, which is another consideration.

It's really a toss up in my mind...it's a really cool car that's fun to drive and definitely draws alot of attention and comments from others. But...you are looking at payments on somewhere from $8,000 up for a new car too.

Please be sure to let us know what you decide to do. If you haven't test driven one, you might want to do that too.

If you can swing it ,keep the Camaro as a hobby car, the HHR is not an expensive set of wheels. The payments might be less than you think....

go to progressive.com and get a quote for both the z and the hhr. Mine dropped 60 bucks every 6 months over the last car I had (04 neon srt4)

I'll be calling my agent really soon to see what's up with the insurance.
It's just me and the wife, no kids. I dont drive the Zee much on the weekends bc the wife has a nice Jeep Grand Cherokee and we do all the shopping/driving/traveling in the SUV. Of course, I could argue that we could use a more fuel-efficient vehicle instead the V8 Jeep (it gets prolly 17 mpg) for all the shopping, etc.
But that's a stretch...

Just buy it! You'll dream about it forever if you don't.
Famous words: it's better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission, just buy it!
I know, I don't walk in your shoes..... you got's to live with the 'little woman' not me. If momma aint happy, aint no body happy!
Just buy it!
