I'm Shopping: HHR or Vibe?

Hi guys!

First of all, let me start by saying that this is a GREAT site! I've been reading up on the HHR (and Pontiac Vibe) for weeks and always stopped in to read the latest here.

I wonder if you can help me choose. I'm looking for a vehicle to replace my Monte Carlo. Basically, I'd like a wagon for the versatility and fuel economy. I love my Monte, I just hate paying for her gas!

I've test driven the Vibe and found it to be pretty nice, if uninspiring. It's been around for years and has been proven reliable. The HHR on the other hand is new and unproven as yet, although it seems to get comparable fuel efficiency, is more powerful and more roomy. I like the looks of both but prefer the HHR a lot more.

One of my neighbourhood dealers still has a few fully loaded 2006 demo HHR's selling at $19,900 (note Canadian funds ). This is thousands less than sticker, though I assume as 2006 models they would not qualify for the 5yr/160K km warranty.

Has anyone compared the Vibe with the HHR when buying? What should I look for in these demos? Is it even worth looking at these demos in the first place? I guess I'm very wary of purchasing new (or demo) because I don't really want to chance making a costly mistake, if that makes sense.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated, believe me! Thanks for reading and for any feedback you can provide. Keep up the great work! Cheers!

From what I understand, any 2006's left should get the new warranty.

jbbadboy......

If the dealer your speaking of has new 2006's still in carryover, he should be giving them away. They will be 2 years old in another month or 2.

Of course this is US, but dealers here are selling the new carryover, "fully loaded" 06's for $5000-6000 off of sticker and they do have the longer warranty.

07's are going for $3000-4000 off of sticker, EASILY. It's the end of model year, HHR inventories are higher than expected, their sales are behind last year by about 25%, and CAFE standards will need to be submitted (the HHR is considered, and listed, in truck sales. That COULD help GM with their meeting of the standard in a very tough area).

Oh and a big WELCOME to the forum.

I bought a 2006 after the 2007s were out and the 5yr/160,000 km warranty was introduced. I only got the 3 yr/60,000 km warranty. I had to buy an extended warranty to take it to 100,000 kms.

One of the members here (Goose) recently traded his Matrix on an HHR.

He'll probably pop in this thread at some point.

If your not willing to put up with the quirks that arise in a 1st year model, don't even consider an 06 HHR. Dory, my 06 HHR, has 21K and has just picked up the AC growl (off/on), and members with 07s are still reporting some issues.
