If that's the situation, as you say, then something is wrong with your car's wiring. Take it to the dealer.
After what you wrote, I went and checked mine to see if I can duplicate your problem.....would not operate as you suggested. And, by chance I caught my next door neighbor getting ready to leave for NY. He's the guy I mentioned in a previous post regarding not having the paint chip problem and also not having assist steps. Checked his car for the light operation, and he doesn't have the problem either. He also has very slight abrasions with 69000miles on the car.
I suggest that people should check for the correct operation of their rear interior light before rushing out to buy some kind of replacement. But, it's up to you.

Yeah, take it in Z. The interior lights should not be affecting your running lights, or any exterior lights period.
You can use the interior light at any time, certainly shouldn`t change headlight operation.
