Just "Rent One"
I haven't driven out of town much the last few years. Can't take 2 dogs and the wife in a Vette or a truck with no extended cab. I guess you could but i rather want to enjoy it.
So, the other day we went to some store which took us by Enterprise Car Rentals. We saw some HHR's behind the fence. Sounds good to me. Why take your own out of town when you can take another?
If the darn thing breaks down, not my problem, just bring me another one.

Renting one is a good idea
Some moron totalled out my truck (1 ton 4 door dually) last year and I rented an HHR for about 60 days while it was getting fixed. They considered my truck totalled out but I decided to get it fixed and keep it anyway since I could not buy a new one for anything near what they gave me.
Anyway the HHR is an economy car but it is kind of stylish, pretty comfortable and a great all around car. For my needs it is a great daily driver and saves me a bunch on gas. I still have to keep my big truck for work but rarely use it now 10 MPG vs. 25-32 MPG. The gas savings difference alone more than makes up the car payment.
I think you should rent one drive it for a while and see how it fits you. I have back pain and I simply could not drive a BMW, sports car or many of the other economy cars because it hurts to sit that low with my feet straight out in front. The HHR has a pretty comfortable seating and feels kide of like a go cart to drive. I like the car and renting one is a good way to see if you like it.

Renting before buying is the only way to go IMHO...
I received an HHR as a loaner when my Dodge Magnum was in the shop... (Enterprise car, not the Dodge Dealer's) and that is where I realized the HHR was the only vehicle I would consider when it came time to trade in the Maggie.
As far as renting one every time you go on a trip, that's got to get expensive... I forget which class the HHR falls into, but if I remember correctly it was $200 to rent for a 3 day weekend. Add onto that the cost of insurance and fuel and you might as well just fly.
I'll definitely rent something else when it comes time to trade in Lil 'Red but I am hoping that's years down the road. :)
