On a rental I pushed it and put 16.3 gallons in....man if we have a 16.2 gallon tank (which I believe is correct) I was really on fumes...and I mean really lol

Well here's what happen to me when I picked up the car the salesman told me he put gas in I thought when I got in the gauge read 1/2 to 3/4 so drove home approx 20 miles. When I got home I thought I would check the relays and fuses sure enough they were loose. Then decide to take the family for a ride but when I got in notice the fuel light on. I figured it was because i pushed something in that was loose and figured the gauge had to be reset. Needlees to say 50 miles from home in the middle of no where you guessed it dead. Let me tell you when it runs out it does not sputter it just dies. Good thing I found a nice farmer who sold me some gas. Quite embarrising for my first trip in the new car but we had a laugh and now the kids and wife know what to look for. PS I quess the salesman did put in gas probably $5.00

In the message display area where your mpg, miles, etc is displayed (dic), it will say low fuel then say you have 50 miles range then you only get the low fuel message , something like that. There is no light per say as some other cars have.

Quite possible you were on fumes more likely the gas station ripped you off!

Hey Deb, I believe the manual and everything else I have read says the gas tank on the HHR is approx 16.2 gals. and not 17
I stand corrected...but I thought I saw here somewhere it was 17...but I've been mistaken before. I did do a google search and have seen quotes from 16 to 16.2, so I can live with that.
