The truth is the Ecotech is a GM global engine and was worked on in Asia, Europe and North America. It was not just a Saab, Opel or Saturn engine as they were just the ones who used it and contributed to it. It just was used first in Europe at Opel and Vauxhaul then Saab and the Saturn. The engine was even used in some other makes if I recall like Alfa Romeo, Lotus and others. This was really GM's first real step to global engines and platforms.
Along the way Saab did contribute some with the things they engineered into their version. GM picked them up and applied it to the others in the line. Also Lotus did some work on the Turbo LNF engine.
The engine is one of the best 4 cylinders on the market and is now just coming to market with a new improved versions of the 2.5 and 2.0. They are more quiet and refined. We will see more versions soon.
Along the way Saab did contribute some with the things they engineered into their version. GM picked them up and applied it to the others in the line. Also Lotus did some work on the Turbo LNF engine.

And GM as was mentioned earlier did not purchase Opel to get the ecotech for the Saturn. GM has owned Opel since the early 70s.
I have no issues with my cars being built in Mexico, or Canada. We are neighbors, and helping them work, helps us. More Mexicans working in Mexico = that many less Mexicans having to cross the border illegally to feed their familys. Not trying to be political. Just saying if all three countrys help one another, we all win.

GM had issues as during the lead up to WWII and during as they owned a company in Germany. Ford also had issues as Hitler and Henry Ford had a great respect for each other.
GM even opted the Opel name to some Asian built Isuzu cars in the late 70's.
Vauxhaul also is a old GM division that serves England and has a little Holden and Opel models.
It remains to be seen what will become of Opel as they are losing a lot of money and now the Chevy line is a full line in Europe now.
Most of GM's cars are linked with each market. GM has strong development in North America, Germany, Korea, Austrailia and Brazil.
The Cruze is Korean, American and German in development. The Camaro is Austrailian and American. The new Colorado that is coming is American and Brazil. Even my GMC Terrain is American, Korean and German.

My bad. I was unaware the partnership of GM Opel went back that far.
I know about the Opel GT sold through Buick in the 70s, and of course the Isuzu built rebadged Luv truck of the same era. And I assume the Vega and Monza were rebadged Opel or Isuzu cars. Vega seems more Isuzu than GM North american or european made.

Neither the Vega nor the Monza were Opel or Isuzu cars. The Monza was the successor to the Vega on the H platform. They were both North American GM cars not rebadged Euro cars.
