Something to do with emissions....winter blends tend to drop mpg in most cars...the colder weather has a lot to do with it also. Longer warmup times etc.

I used to drop from 35-36 mpg in my Matrix to 28-30 in the winter months

Actually, with the temperatures dropping here, I have experienced and INCREASE in MPG......of course the temp. drop is from 115 to about 85-90

And, we are one of the States that uses a "designer" fuel.

Wow. I average a tank of gas a week.

Mine went down from 33 or so to 28 so i went over the car and found the tire pressures had dropped so I bumped them back up to 40psi and changed my oil to full synthetic and got the mpg up to 32.

I guess it pays to check the tires a little more often! I hadn't checked the pressure for quite a while until yesterday. What a surprise. I try to keep 32/34 psi in both the HHR and the Altima (Which is over what they both call for) All 8 tires were down to 25 psi! Very strange they were all the same. I'm sure that wasn't helping the gas mileage.

FYI, tire pressure will drop about 1 PSI for each 10* F drop in temp.

As the weather cools, it's good to make sure to check your tire pressures.

As the weather cools and we don't use the AC, the mpg should be increasing. However, I took a 600 mile trip to Gainesville and back and only got 27 mpg. I got 30 in October on the way to St Louis.

Do you think the "winter blend" is actually gas with ethanol added? That will always drop your mpgs.

You can usually check out a stations website (if they are a large chain) and they should provide a description of the product.

http://www.petrocanada.ca/en/product...vices/318.aspx

This is chain that I only filled up at (with about 99% regularaty) and their description of their winter formula.

Nope. Here in Ontario, the government has mandated that the gasoline must have a minumum of 5% ethanol in it. We have ethanol in our gas all year long.

That will always drop your mpgs.
I don't think it's really that big of a drop. I've used non-ethanol gas in my cars before, and it only worked out to about 20 miles per tank difference in mileage.

It takes about 30% more ethanol than gasoline to drive a mile. I think the maximum amount of ethanol in gasoline is 10% (Gasohol).

If you were getting 30 MPG with 100% gasoline; you should get 28.8 MPG with a 10% ethanol mix.

You also need to check your tire pressure EVERY month.
