mpg questions
Hello, Just got a 2006 hhr and don't understand the mpg that shows or the fuel thing. It says I am getting 17 mpg and my average speed is 24 mph. What's up with this? I am hoping something "aint" right. I am going more near 40-50 mpg and I was hoping to get 25-30 mpg
Can this be wrong and what can I do to correct it? Thanks, sandra

Read the owners manual on using the Digital Info Center. You need to reset the readings back to zero to start "fresh". If you don't reset at each fillup, it will just calculate all the readings adding in the previous stored data.
Don't have an owners manual ? We have them on this site for download.
Look under the General info section.

The MPG figure that is displayed is calculated using the total amount of fuel burned, even when the vehicle is not moving. Short trips with lots of traffic lights and stop signs absolutely kills fuel economy in any vehicle.
The average MPH is simply the distance traveled divided by the amount of time it took to cover the distance, expressed in miles per hour. For instance: if you commute 30 miles to work, and it takes you 35 minutes to complete the journey even though you were going 70 MPH on the Interstate for almost 30 minutes, your average is 51.4 MPH. You were traveling much slower during the time it took to get on the Interstate and during the time it took to reach your destination when you got off the Interstate.
MPH relates total engine operating time to distance traveled. MPG relates total fuel consumption (whether the vehicle is on motion or not) to distance traveled.
