My HHR buying experience

You said a mouthful there. That pretty much explains all the polarizing designs that have been fostered on the public.
Although even the much maligned American Motor's Pacer sold 2.5 Million in 5 years. Pontiac Aztec anyone? SSR?
The SSR only sold approx 8500 units in 2005. GM projected 16,000. 103 days of inventory. Price? Value or looks...? With the failure of the SSR I am surprised GM released the HHR except the HHR was on the boards before the SSR. Kudos to GM for taking chances and attempting to break away from monotone Ford seems to love. When Ford achieves the reliability of Honda They can be boring as well.
The biggest hope for those who desperately want the HHR to be the next Mustang is the Scion Xb. Now THAT'S a popular car despite it's love it or hate it look.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by special orders being non-existent at this time. Why would they be non-existent? Perhaps lead-times are running at the long end of their spectrum, but none of the dealers I spoke with made any mention of not being able to fulfill a special order within the 6-8 week range, nor did any discourage me from ordering one, even with an opt-out deposit refund if the vehicle did not arrive by a certain date, or steer me toward an one of their in-stock vehicles instead which would yield cash-in-hand that day..
My thought was....as the strike becomes more concentrated in the media, dealers see slower activity. But, alas the strike did not reach those proportions.....luckily.
