It is not damaged

There is no damage to the ring and there is no rough running in fact it gets 29 mpg. It is a 2.2 motor. The 5 volt ref is there with no start the 5 volt ref is there while cranking and is there when running.

I didn't mean the sensor was damaged; I meant one may ha been damaged in the past and left copper wire inside the engine.

I still don't know what was going on immediately before this started.

I just found a torque spec for the reluctor ring (11 lb.ft.), but no procedure just says it is part of the crankshaft.

I did some digging on this car I bought the car knowing it was not running. It had a bad motor, timing chain broke so you all know what happens there. A 2005 motor was put in it was a very low mileage motor. I did my research before buying a found the short block of the 2005 was the same as a 2007, the heads were what was different because of the cam sensor. The head off the bad motor was with the car so repaired it and put it on the car. The car started up but has the issue I am trying to fix.

Surprise! Surprise!
Forgot to mention an important bit.

When I don't have anything better to do I may waste some more time on this.

A 2005 what?
Funny there is a huge difference between 2006 and 2007 HHRs. For instance the way the ignition is timed.

I am not sure that the crank position sensor has anything to do with the tachometer.

From Chevy Cobalt Forum / Cobalt Reviews / Cobalt SS / Cobalt Parts - View Single Post - Ecotec Engines

On engines produced before 2007, spark was produced via 2 coils in a cassette that bolted to the top of the valve cover which contained the boots for each spark plug on the bottom of it, eliminating the need for wires. In 2007 the L61 was upgraded with a second generation cylinder case, coil on plug ignition, 58x crankshaft position sensing and a 32-bit computer.

Here also https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/gene...-summary-9390/

Might this be the issue?

You have put in the wrong engine, and your choices now are very limited. According to this link Crank reluctor wheels, The reluctor is cast into the crank in the '05 block, so you can't just change the reluctor. The poster, Maven, is very knowledgeable.

1.) Change the crankshaft
2.) Change the engine
3.) Live with the CEL(not recommended)

You could try installing an '05 crank sensor, but it probably won't work with the computers in the vehicle. If it even has the right wiring connector.

Pre 2007 engines have a 7 tooth reluctor wheel, 2007 onward have 58 teeth.

The pre 2007 sensor is 2 wire, 2007 onward is 3 wire digital.

This answers the question: can a 2006 engine be installed in a 2007-2008? A: yes but
