wait until you hear this, from the dealer
I went to the dealership today to check on status...talked to the new car manager rather than my "salesman". I ordered the 07 HHR on July 24. It has a scheduled build date of 9/11..that's right taking about 6 or 7 weeks from time of order to just start to build it. Then delivery is expected one month later, in October...a full 10 to 12 weeks after initial order. WHY I asked..having ordered numerous Pontiacs over the past years and none taking over 4 to 5 weeks to reach me. Simple really...Pontiacs are made in US and/or Canada. HHR's are made in Mexico. He also said the demand is greater than the capacity of the plant. Oh well, I've waited this long.

Supply vs. Demand... In Country vs. Out. Fun stuff, eh? Aren't you glad GM's SAVING MONEY by shipping work OUT of the country!?!?!?!?
Next to houses, I'd say that vehicles are American's biggest (and probally the MOST FREQUENT) "large" (defined as 'high cost') purchase! You'd think they could step-up production, add another shift (or 2), or add another factory to THIS line of vehicles to reduce turn-around time!?!? I don't think it's all that pleasing (for the customer) to start off on such a bad note.
( enough ranting)
Hang in there... it was awful for me too... PLUS I had sold my previous vehicle 3 weeks into my order!!! (Yep- had no car for several weeks)
When you think about it, who really knows when they started manufacturing the 2007's (09/01/06)???

I am doing work for GM and know for a fact that some (maybe all) of the factories were shut down for 2 weeks or so at the beginning of July for their annual shutdown (i.e. vacation).
I doubt that any retooling needed to be done to the HHR line since there are no drastic changes between the 06 and 07 models.

Hi Scoot......
One thing you missed, that had been mentioned to me....
GM is intentionally slowing production to maintain quality issues. The strategy for years has been to "hammer" them out...the more vehicle, the more money. And, that created SOME of the quality issues. Although, GM management did not directly support this, they were pushed into a position of needing more money by producing more product. But, that theory, in particular, has caused GM loss of market share and the perception of "still" producing poor quality product.
This new strategy MAY benefit you and I. With smaller units of produced product with higher demand, better quality, AND the new warranty, we should recognize a greater resale value of our vehicles......basic economics, really. GM appears to have this strategy for all new models....i.e., Solstice, Skky, HHR. Time will tell.
Oh, by the way...on an unrelated note. Redline Water Wetter appears to have no effect on my cooling....but, I really need to run the car under the same conditions and temperatures have changed a lot.
Black Rose....you are wrong. Maybe not entirely...but close. GM uses this time to their advantage. Retooling is continual....but major "die buffing" and retooling, building maintenance, press repair etc. is done during this time. And this summer shutdown, for 2 weeks, saves GM tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of dollars in wages and salaries. Each location determines "critical" needs based on a projected budget and personal is selected to work within that budget and critical need. Salaried personal use vacation time for this 2 weeks (thus, no wage lost)...can't tell you how the costs are handled by the UNION...but that was a negotiated issue at one time...because, IMO, the unions would not do their part.
Let's hope that all the new strategies work !!!

Snoop...
Hmmmm- I guess I was unaware of any intentional slowing of production. That's new news to me! (Thanks!)
As for the Watter Wetter (everyone else--> this was the subject on a different thread)... I'm really surprised you haven't noticed a difference. I have, since, seen higher temps than previously proclaimed, but overall runs at a much more 'reasonable' temperature. Again - I've used that product time and time again (cars & motorcycles alike) with similar results... lower temps. If worse comes to worse- look at it this way, your only out a few bucks AND it won't promote any premature wear on anything under your hood!
As for shut-down... I too understood shut-down to be a re-tooling time, as that's what my F-I-L does for GM (tool and die guy). I guess, however, I never associated shut-down with the new production model year. Always thought that was closer to late-August/September???
