The key will remain locked in the ignition switch if the trans is not fully engaged into "Park." If yours was in Park, you should take it to the dealer and have the transmission interlock adjusted or replaced. A very few had similar problems on some early production runs. Adjusting or replacing the interlock cured the problem.

If it happens again, try shifting into Low, than back up to Park, to see if this releases the key.

Thanks guys.

I just want to say I love my HHR and I already have the urge to beat the crap out of a PT. I only have a little over 100 miles on it. LOL
I'm getting very nice compliments from family and friends. I just wish it had all wheel drive. I guess that's what my 05 Grand Cherokee is for.

You really don't need AWD. I had mine out last winter in the snow when we got dumped on, and it'll handle pretty much anything you can throw at it. If it cann't you shouldn't be out driving anyway.
