My 2.4 only has 300 miles on it, but my mileage is pretty poor also.
I was alarmed when I checked and saw an average of 17mpg or so, until I looked at my average speed which was 12 mph!!

We went on a short drive this past weekend to stretch it's legs a little bit. I don't put very many miles on cars at all- usually around 4,000 per year, but 12 mph?? That's laughable. Way too many traffic lights.

i get 23 with combined highway and rural road driving im not sure if this is the greatest. The rural roads have some stop signs and have many hills and turns. Is this good gas mileage?

My DIC always reads the high teens for in city driving too.
I know in CA we have oxygenated gas which effects the MPG by 10 to 20% lower. Do you all have the same gas in the other 49 states?

I'm not sure of how or what algorithm is designed for the DIC. But here is what I noticed...

I filled my HHR's gas tank and reset ALL the mileage related readings to "0". The freeway was about 100 yards away, so "city driving" is not a factor. Then entering the freeway I locked the cruise control on 65 MPG, and watched the average MPG read out. It DID NOT indicate my highest reading (33) until I was 43 miles along the road.

So, the point is, that the MPG readings are not instant. It will take mileage to determine mileage....well, dah...kind of a dumb statement, huh.

Oh, by the way, my average MPH was 53. This was ALL highway driving with cruise control on 65 MPH. BUT, I had about 1 hour, collectively, in idling time with a/c, etc....overall mileage 31 MPG.

I drive 18 miles to work each way and all but the last 2 miles are open freeway and I am only getting around 22 mpg. Sure, I may be cruising around 70+ mph, but come on now. Where is my mileage?

My avg hwy drive is 70's to low 90's as far as MPH. Just depends on the music and still get close to 30mpg. And this is all coming from the DIC. Must be doing something right. HAHAHA!

mine is the 2.2 with auto trans, this morning it was reading 21.8 mpg and I only drive about 4 miles each way everyday, with several traffic lights on my route.

ETA; maybe if you reset it, you will get an accurate reading.

Guess Im one of the odd balls. 2.4L w/ automagical trans and im averaging about 25-26mpg in my daily commute, both in the DIC and doing the math based on my fillups and mileage driven.

I drive 8 miles each way with 5 lights.

On my vacation to SC, i was averaging 33mpg on I95 doing 70mph.
